Africa Due South - Lowveld Legend

Johannesburg, South Africa, Africa

"The Legend" is a superb weeks motorcycle adventure taking the rider from the plains of the Highveld (highlands) descending down the Northern Drakensberg Mountain range into the warm lush lowveld (lowlands) region via it's myriad of un-congested passes. The week is paused for a day as you are taken into the World famous Big 5 game habitat Kruger National Park for a rest day. The tour is aptly named as the region lends itself to the quixotic at heart who yearn back to bygone days when gold diggers sought their fortune and transport riders hunted for their daily meal.

Joe from Due South organized this tour for me and a friend in June 2010, just ahead of the kickoff of the World Cup. The tour was amazing! My first organized riding experience abroad... and one of the best riding and vacation experiences I've ever had. First off, the organization of the tour was fantastic. Joe, the owner of Due-South and our guide on the tour, had booked two great motorcycles (R1200GS for myself; F650GS for my friend) and all accommodations for us. Picking up the bikes and dealing with the rental agency was easy and pleasant. WE had absolutely no problems with the bikes. We stayed in a variety of accommodations, local B&Bs and lodges, the Graskop Hotel, and a bush camp outside of Krueger NP. All of them were spotless, very accommodating and had a local (rather than corporate) feel. The scenery on the tour was spectacular... steep mountain passes, canyons, God's Window (an absolutely awe-inspiring sight!), incredible vistas and beautiful roads. We rode the "Sabie-22" (22 kms for flawless roads with about 100 curves of varying degrees, angles, in-/declines) trice... just because we could. :) Joe was wonderfully hospitable and accommodating... making sure that we saw and experienced the best sight and roads, and at the same time adapting to our pace. We only once felt in a rush... after a long day of riding and trying to get to our accommodation before sunset. He is also just a great guy... easy to get along with. I highly recommend this spectacular tour. It inspired me to do more riding in other parts of the world. What a great way to get to know a country.
