Victoria Falls & Beyond 17 Day Tour

, Transafrica, Africa

At Swartberg Biking we have created an exclusive 17 day journey through Southern Africa to suit most riders. Your epic journey starts and ends in the Gauteng province of South Africa from where we ride in a westerly direction. We traverse the lush Bushveld region and two days later we cross the border into Botswana. We drive by numerous settlements and towns as we make our way to the Chobe Region. Chobe National Park is an icon in Botswana and is known for its variety of wildlife and quality sightings. We spend two nights at a game lodge bordering the Chobe Reserve and enjoy a boat safari and three bush safaris in Chobe National Park. It is a short ride to get to Livingstone, home to the majestic Victoria Falls. We cross the Zambezi by ferry and officially enter Zambia. This landlocked mineral rich country has been described as the “true Africa”. We head towards Livingstone to enjoy and appreciate the mighty Victoria Falls. The roads are good and the windy roads with its smooth curves and sweeping bends compliments the Zambian landscape. In Zambia riders will pass by numerous traditional villages and find friendly people all over. One cannot but ponder upon what Dr. David Livingston encountered when he first arrived here! The town Livingstone offers an array of activities from white water rafting and bungee jumping for the more adventurous to helicopter rides for the less so. In Livingstone we enjoy a Zambezi dinner river cruise and a guided tour of the falls. Our next stop is Lusaka before reaching Chipata, our final stop in Zambia. This town featured in Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor’s Longway Down route and is a popular stop over for overlanders. Shortly after departing Chipata we cross into Malawi. Formerly known as Nyasaland and one of the smaller countries on the continent, much of the country lies within the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. The Rift Valley floor at the lakeshore is almost at sea level but the bordering plateau rises to between 490m and 1500m. The roads lead one through numerous traditional villages as more than two thirds of the 12 million inhabitants live in the rural areas. Lake Malawi offers superb snorkeling and diving at Cape Maclear and here one can find over 600 different species of fish. The lake is also known for its laid back atmosphere and unique sunset cruises which will liven up any weary rider. Good quality roads and pleasant vistas will keep riders entertained as we criss-cross the hilly plateau of southern Malawi. After relaxing on the shore of Lake Malawi we head towards Tete in Mozambique. Mozambique is aptly also known as the land of “the smiling people” and palm trees. We follow the flow of the mighty Zambezi and head towards the Indian Ocean, this time crossing the Zambezi for the last time. Our next stop is Tete which is situated on the banks of the Zambezi and one of the biggest towns in the north of Mozambique. The vast and desolate interior of Mozambique, sadly destroyed by years of war, is our only companion as we head south to the town of Chimoio. From here we ride to Vilancolous, a popular holiday spot among South Africans. We spend two nights enjoying the warm waters of the Agulhas current flowing down the east coast of Mozambique. . Our next stop is Xai-Xai from where we ride past Maputo, the capital where we join the Maputo corridor which takes us back into South Africa. Our last night on tour, we stay in Nelspruit before we head back to Johannesburg. This is where our ride started 16 days ago. Our last days on the bikes should allow us time to reflect on the experience we have enjoy, places we have visited and friends we have made as we ride into the City of Gold. Highlights - Chobe boat and land based safaris, Victoria Falls, Zambezi sunset dinner cruise, Lake Malawi Total Kilometre's - 5230km Ave daily km's - 400km
