An interview with Global Bike Tours

Q. What is Global Bike Tours?

Coulthard: "Biker friends told me they wished there was somewhere to search for bike tours around the world. So here it is...an Internet based list of motorbike tours that operate on every continent around the world"

Q. How did Global Bike Tours come into being?

Coulthard: "I wasn't really looking to start an online ‘business' as such, I wanted to create an enterprise that was niche and one that eventually becomes a platform for helping out of work but talented people to train and eventually get jobs"

Q. Wouldn't talented kids make it anyway without Global?

Coulthard: "Yes I think they would but there is a whole group of talented kids, that haven't had the best start in life, that find it hard to get jobs because of their background"

Q. Their background?

Coulthard: "Kids that dropped out of school, some could be ex offenders or homeless others may have suffered from drawbacks such as alcohol dependency or substance misuse others may have disability or mental illness issues"

Q. So how will Global help these people?

Coulthard: "This website is one of ten sites doing much the same thing. Global will ‘employ' these talented people as associates on a three-year programme. In year one they will learn about going to work in year two about being at work and in year three about staying at work"

"Their associateship will be intense and hard work, their workload heavy and demanding and their application tough and uncompromising. But those that make it through their three year stay at Global will either get a job or we'll help them move on to a higher education programme"

Q. So what's in it for you?

Coulthard: "Why don't you come and help us by mentoring and supporting interns through the programme...only then will you see what is in it for me"

"At Global we measure ‘assets' as the number of lives we transform, ‘profit' as the number of people who make it through the programme and our ‘investment' as something placed in people that may one day return to become future managers of this adventure"

Q. How are you gong to find these talented individuals?

Coulthard:  "Global will run a competition to find them, a competition with a difference, one where individuals demonstrate their character, their ambition and their drive...in anything at all"

"The vast majority of their barriers are because of the crap that's been in their lives so far and we know how to remove those barriers. The difference to our approach is that if we really want to engage with them it is Global that will have to change its own ‘circumstances' to meet them right where they are at"

Q. Isn't there an easier way of helping these people?

Coulthard:  ‘Successive Governments have tried really hard to help those at the margins of society...there are many great support organisations, charities and individuals doing everything they can to make a difference, but the numbers are growing and at Global we want to try a different way of fixing the problem once and for all"

Q. What makes you think this will work?

Coulthard:  "Global is just one of many innovative things that could work, there isn't just one answer to their problems. If it changes one person's life for good then I'll be happy...besides, we don't have a plan B so that makes us focus on getting plan A right.

Passion, commitment, application, hard work and sunny bike-riding days should do the rest"
